We live in Prague – in an old city with many architectural monuments. But as the time goes, every city becomes more modern and loses its cultural identity and historical value. The question is, if it is a big problem and if new buildings should be built in the traditional style. I think, that this issue can be solved. Good choice would be that both of them – old houses and modern buildings, work co-operatively in order to embellish cities.
But some people are strongly against new architecture. They say that it is the style of the traditional buildings that characterize a city. They call it a heritage passed down from previous generations. In their opinion constructing new buildings in the old style is a way to protect a country’s cultural identity and traditional values. Another argument for building new houses in the traditional style is that children and young people can learn their past and traditions from these buildings which are the evidence of history.
In my opinion, with the development of society, the culture must be needed to develop too. Modern buildings are obvious results of the constant progress in construction techniques and are more economical than traditional ones in terms of space. Actually not all the types of buildings can be suitable to be built in traditional style. Modern buildings provide functions which are not possessed by traditional buildings. For example emergency exit is basic and necessary part of new houses, whereas the traditional cannot have these functions which are necessary for people in modern life.
In conclusion, both older and newer buildings have many advantages and disadvantages. The government should encourage building more high-rise buildings to satisfy its inhabitants' higher demands as well as invest effectively in repairing old buildings to conserve traditional values. Simply, traditional buildings should be based on modern ones and vice versa.
